Idukki is a stunning hill station in Kerala (the god’s own country) and an ideal destination for travelers. It is a landlocked district displaying the rich natural belongings. The word “Idduki” is derived from the Malayalam word “Idduku” which means a narrow George. Located in the middle part of Kerala it is bounded by Madurai from the east, Ernakulam and Kottayam from the west, Pathanamthitta from the south and by Tamil Nadu and Trichur from north. It is one of the largest districts of the god’s own country and a true destination for tourists. Being the largest district it covers an area of 5105.22 square kilometers. It is situated at an altitude of 2200 m from the sea level. The 98 percent of an area are covered by the rugged mountains and green forests.
Idukki has a morsel history attached to it. The entire region was early in the rule of Kongu Nadu and the Chera Dynasty. Later, it was declared as a district under the government notification on 24th January in the year 1972. The place was under many rulers and finally came in the rule of Poonjar Raja. During his period the Britishers invade Kerala among which European planters planned the area for cultivation. In the year 1877 the Poonjar ruler leased about 227 sq km of land for plantation to the European planter, John Danial Manore. The planters developed the areas and migrated to high ranges where they built many attractive bungalows. Finally in the year 1972 it was separated as an Idukki district of Kerala.

The people of Kerala usually speak in Idukki is Malayalam and the other major languages spoken in the area are like Hindi, English etc. There is no such hard and harsh rule that you must only speak the principal language in Kerala. You can speak other languages in the place. Idukki falls under Kerala and the place is a mixture of different faiths like Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism etc. You can also see other tribal people residing on the place and it is said to be from their ancestors.
